Rental Car Firms Face Shortage as Travel Demand Revs Back Up

As summer leisure travel ramps up, travel industry insiders predict the rental car shortage currently gripping the U.S. is likely to worsen before it gets better.

"I potentially see the situation becoming a bigger problem over the next few months," said Chris Brown, executive editor of Auto Rental News. "The country is opening up this summer, and there just aren't many cars to be had in the U.S. market."

According to Brown, groundwork for the rental shortage was first laid in the spring of 2020, when the Covid-19 crisis brought travel -- and consequently, the car rental industry -- to a grinding halt.

U.S Extends Travel Restrictions at Canada, Mexico Land Borders Through July 21

WASHINGTON, June 20 (Reuters) - U.S. land borders with Canada and Mexico will remain closed to non-essential travel until at least July 21, the U.S. Homeland Security Department said on Sunday.

The 30-day extension came after Canada announced its own extension on Friday of the requirements that were set to expire on Monday and have been in place since March 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The U.S. government held working-group meetings with Canada and Mexico on the travel restrictions last week and plans to hold meetings about every two weeks, U.S. officials told Reuters.
